First week of Funemployment

First-week-of-Funemployment-1

I’ve started catching up on some of the TV shows I’ve been wanting to watch. I love drama shows but I have to be in the right mood to watch them. I’m usually pretty mentally drained from work so I watch loads of (maybe too many) comedy shows. I pretty much devoured The Fall in a day and a bit and I’ve just finished season one of Fargo. INTENSE, GUYS! I’ll be moving on to True Detective. Other shows on my radar: Halt and Catch Fire (!!! Lee Pace *insert emoji with heart eyes*), Peaky Blinders, The Good Wife and Orphan Black. Hit me up with recommendations in the comments!

I’ve been doing more than just watching TV! Or at least, I’m trying to. When I was working full time, I always complained I never had time do anything creative so I’m really trying to use my time wisely now. I’m currently living at my parents’ place because I am acting chauffeur for my brother. He got a job at a restaurant and needs someone to pick him up after his late shifts. The change has been quite nice, although I do feel a little displaced. I feel reasonably relaxed at my parents’ place but I also feel like I’m living out of a suitcase, with my core belongings and clothes still at my place.

One of the things I started doing again is paint with watercolour. I thought I’d do something useful while bingeing on TV shows. It’s been really great! I painted a sunflower which I’m really happy with. It was sort of inspired by Klimt’s sunflower painting. I tried to paint something similar in acrylic paint but it didn’t quite work out.

First-week-of-Funemployment-2

I got together with my friend Edwina, who’s got a sweet little Etsy shop full of her craft projects, for an afternoon of painting. I painted this … thing. I don’t really know what it is but I quite like it, but also feel like it’s missing something. What do you think?

First-week-of-Funemployment-3

This week I’m focussing more on music. I haven’t played my ukulele in a while so I wanted to dedicate more of my time this week to music. It’s been really fun. I’ve stopped mucking around with song covers and started playing with chords and I think I wrote a song! I just need to nail down the lyrics. I’m finding the lyric part of songs really hard, probably because I don’t really know what to write about. I guess it’s like sitting down and trying to write a poem when you don’t know what you want to convey. Anyway, it’s obviously rough as at the moment. If it’s any good (or if it’s god awful), I’ll chuck it up on Soundcloud.

What awesome projects have you been doing this week?

4 Things I’ll do when I get free time

I’ve been working on this film project for two weeks and it occurred to me only on Saturday there’s still another two weeks of work left. It’s made me appreciate my free time a whole lot more. All the things I’ve always wanted/needed to do but never got around doing will be first priority when I’m free. Most importantly, I need to get my bloody car serviced. It’s been making strange noises!

So here goes. Things I will be doing once I am free:

1) Get a haircut.

I literally haven’t cut my hair since 2011. After I outgrew my Tegan and Sara hair phase, I wanted long, fluffy hair that you can flip. Now that it’s long, it’s also a tad unhealthy. I have to braid it to sleep so it’s easier to brush in the mornings. I’m thinking about giving it a short trim, and maybe adding a blunt fringe. OR I could cut it chin length and dye it peroxide blonde. Hmm.

2) Go to more gigs

One of the things I thought I’d do more of when I moved out was see more live music. I live in an area with lots of live music joints so it’s astounding why I haven’t done this yet. Several musos related to my work have got gigs coming up in July and I’m desperately hoping I’ll get a chance to see their gigs and meet them in real life.

3) Visit art galleries and do more painting in general

I’ve managed to squeeze some time in between this film project to do a spot of painting but I feel all I do is paint images I find online. I haven’t done any original stuff and it’s frustrating me. Part of it comes down to lack of skill but I also lack a bit of inspiration. I hope going to galleries will at least get me itching to paint or try new techniques.

4) ‘Revamp’ my style.

OK this one I’m a bit embarrassed about. I am sartorially bored. I want to have fun with fashion, but I’m also not bold enough to dabble in more daring trends. I’m thinking about investing in a really good winter coat, pair of jeans and maybe a pair of boots that go up to my knees. I’m going to NYC at the end of the year (did I mention that?) so these investments will prove useful. I should check out some fashion blogs, maybe create a Pinterest board. What trends in fashion are you really digging these days?

So, if you’ve had a busy few weeks, what would be some of the things you’d do when you get free time?

My Week In Review: Party planning, pets and liquid eye liner

Boy, last week was crazy!

Last Friday, my work celebrated its third birthday. I was in charge of planning the party and it was a very interesting month. I’m a noob at events planning, so I learned a great deal from this experience. I got help from Imogen from Hub Melbourne, who has a lot of experience in planning events, and my team at work. My team were really helpful when I was freaking out and Imogen was just amazing to work with. I learned so much from her.

There are a few things I would do differently if I had to plan a second event. In general, I’d be more organised and plan everything better. I think what makes Imogen such a great events planner is because she really takes care of the small details, which make the events just that much more special.

I spent the week driving around the CBD buying booze and food for the party. There were so many small but important things that had to get done at last minute and it was all really stressful. Not to mention, I had to take time out one day to go to a presentation workshop. In the end, the party turned out really well, and the bosses, I think, are pleased. They seemed to have a good night. We had about 200 people there, the DJ was great and there was enough food and booze. And we bought a giant panda at Costco.

Now that the party is over, my body has decided to break down a bit. I’ve got some kind of cold. My chest feels very congested, I have a dry cough and I’m gross and snotty. I had a feeling this would happen so I’m very grateful I have today off! I also got the chance to do some painting, which always makes me happy.

I also played with some liquid eyeliner. I’m terrible at it, but I bought a cheap one to practice the skills with. I also looked at this tutorial, which makes it look really easy! I think I just need to practice a bit more.

In other news, I visited my parents this weekend for Mother’s Day (we had yum cha!) and got to hang out with my dogs. When we left, my dog Momo was sad to see us go. I always feel really sad when I don’t get to hang out with my dogs. I guess it’s all part of this “growing up”/moving out process.

Anyway, I have this cute cat to occupy my time with. We usually have cuddle times in the evenings. Her name is Sakai and she is a named after a Japanese activist. I always think she’s named after the French Ironchef Hiroyuki Sakai. Ha.

Hope you’re all having a good week. What did you get up to this weekend?
